Crossing Borders Articles
We accept short (1 page) articles for publication that highlight the application of geoscience research to societal issues. Consideration is also given to articles that address the health of geoscience discipline as a whole and introduce new tools, research methods, and or concepts that can be applied to address societal challenges, raise the awareness of the geoscience in society, and improve the demographics of the geoscience profession as a whole. Submit your manuscript, name, affiliation, and references to the YES Network Newsletter Publication team.

Communications Team Updates
Congratulations to Amel Barich! She is the new chairperson for the Communications Team and will be also serving on the Executive Board as the Communications Team representative.

Professional Development Team Updates
The Professional Development Team is currently working on a list of potential organizations where YES Network members can easily find career resources (e.g. jobs, scholarships), and are also in the process of interviewing scientists about career tips. Additionally, Reuben is working with Gabriela Perlingeiro on as part of the planning activities for the YES Congress 2012.

Skype Chats & Webinars

We are always looking for new and innovative ways to encourage YES Network members to become involved in YES Network activities. We are planning to start a series of on-line discussion sessions held via skype. These will run in a similar way to the online component of our roundtable sessions. If you would like to volunteer to run a topic please get in touch (networkyes.president@gmail.com). Topics could be related to Earth science, careers, outreach, crossing borders, etc. We will provide you with support on running the session.

Over the last decade the interdisciplinary domain of Geobiology including geomicrobiology has generated plenty of interests among geologists, earth scientists and biologists. New discoveries in geomicrobiology has significantly changed the way we think about the origin and evolution of life on earth. YES Geomicrobiology is an initiative of YES Network to motivate early-career geoscientists to pursue research in geobiology and also encourage collaboration amongst geologists, geochemists microbiologists and environmental scientists. Through this platform ideas will be exchanged among YES Network members in areas of geobiology including geomicrobiology. Job openings/PhD positions/Meetings and workshops/grants applications relevant to the field of geomicrobiology will be posted on a regular basis. Opportunities for establishing long-term international research collaborative link amongst early career geoscientists will be actively explored from this platform.

The First International Conference on African & Arabian Geoparks:
Aspiring Geoparks in Africa and Arab world

The First International Conference on African & Arabian Geoparks: Aspiring Geoparks in Africa and Arab world conference will be held in El Jadida, Morocco, 21-28 November, 2011. For more information about the conference, please visit http://www.africangeoparksnetwork.org/

The African Geoparks Network “AGN” was initiated during the precongress of the fifth conference of the AAWG held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in May 2009. The AGN aims to identify, promote, and advise on the importance and preservation of geological sites in Africa in collaboration with other stakeholders. This initiative is supported by UNESCO, IUGS, GSAf. In that Framework, the AAWG and the AGN in collaboration with UNESCO Cairo Office decided to organize the First International Conference on African and Arabs Geoparks in 2011 in Morocco.

The conference also aims to launch the Arabian Geopark Network. All researchers in the fields of geoheritage, geotourism, conservation, environment and sustainable development, policy makers, economists, geopark and local community administrators and leaders, NGOs, business operators, Medias and individuals with interest in geoheritage development are invited to participate and contribute to make this event a success.

Travel Fellowship Program for Students and Early-Career Scientists Attending the 2011 INQUA Congress in Bern, Switzerland
Application Deadline: 15 February

The U.S. National Committee for Quaternary Research announces the INQUA Congress Travel Fellowship Program for students and early-career (within 7 years of PhD) researchers at U.S. institutions attending the XVIII INQUA Congress in Bern, Switzerland, on 20-27 July 2011.

Applicants must be first authors of a paper to be presented at the Congress (oral or poster), and enrolled at or employed by a U.S. institution.  The number of fellowships available will depend upon the amount of funding that the committee obtains from its sponsors; each award is anticipated to be a maximum of $2,000.

Please note that the call for poster abstracts for the XVIII INQUA Congress is still open. A submitted abstract is necessary to apply for a travel fellowship. INQUA will send notifications of acceptance of the abstracts directly to the authors. Applications for the USNC/INQUA-sponsored fellowship will be due on February 15, and we expect to notify the awardees by approximately May 1. IUGS-IGC-YES Network: Early Career Geoscientists Essay Contest: The Future of the Geological Sciences
Submission Deadline: 7 March

The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) is organizing and sponsoring a global geoscience essay contest for early career geoscientists to voice their outlook on the future of the geosciences. IUGS invites all early career geoscientists, under 35 years of age, to submit an essay on their view of the Future of the Geological Sciences.

The winning essay will be published as the lead article in Episodes magazine, the global publication of IUGS which is distributed in 150 countries. The winner will also receive free registration to the next International Geological Congress (IGC) to be held in Brisbane, Australia in August 2012. The winner will be acknowledged formally with a Medal to be presented at the IUGS awards ceremony during IGC Australia. For more information, download the contest flyer.
